DOS Launching Bond Pilot Program for Certain B-1/B-2 Visa Applicants
The Department of State (DOS) announced a temporary final rule, which goes into effect on August 20, that requires B-1/B-2 visa applicants from designated countries to post a $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000 bond in order to obtain the visa.
Currently, the two countries included in this pilot program are Malawi and Zambia. The country list may change and is expected to include countries with high overstay rates or deficient vetting and screening processes, or countries which offer citizenship by investment with no residency requirement.
Visas issued under the program will be valid for up to three months, and a single entry to the United States. Visa holders will be granted a 30-day maximum entry to the U.S. Visa holders will receive the re-payment of their full bond if they comply with the terms of their visa status while in the U.S. and either timely depart or timely and properly file an extension of stay or change of status request.
