SCOTUS Allows Trump Administration to Deport Immigrants to Third Countries

A U.S. Supreme Court opinion issued on June 23rd overturned a lower court ruling that required the government to give immigrants due process in explaining why they could face serious harm, such as torture and death, if sent to a third country. The 6-3 decision allows the Trump administration to deport immigrants to third countries, including those countries not their home countries, and where they have no meaningful, or any ties. The case involved eight immigrants from Myanmar, South Sudan, and Cuba who were deported in May, reportedly to South Sudan. The court’s three liberal justices called the decision “a gross abuse” of power that risks exposing people to violence and serious danger. Justice Sotomayor criticized the ruling, saying the court had chosen to ignore the harm that thousands could face.
